Art has always been the core of my life, beginning in early childhood when I used art as my first mode of communication as a deaf child in a hearing family. It was a matter of time before I began my journey into formal (and not so formal) education with classes at the Arkansas Arts Center, and private instructions, moving on to courses in high school and universities. My family also includes artists, musicians, actors and producers. My primary interest lies in the humanity that surrounds us, and its diversity. Because of this, I never run out of ideas or material for a painting or sculpture. In addition, I also use the equine species in my work as I find them complex and abstract by nature. In my clay sculptures, I like to explore the textural properties that can be found and provide a contrast in study. I try to take the ‘ordinary’ from life and turn it into something to be analyzed deeper than what would be seen at face value. I feel that working in the 3-D dimension increases the awareness of volume, which can make the transition into the 2-D format - and vice-versa. In my recent sculpture, ‘Pondering Monk’, I tried to keep this a neutral piece, which can be applied to any era and race, ethics and nationality. In doing so, I focused on the mood of the figure with usage of the hands and facial expression. At the same time, I wanted to play around with the rich possibilities of textural effect and the color range. This has turned into one of my favorite pieces so far.
