 Note from the President

Well 2008 is almost gone and 2009 is just around the corner, I know it seems to most as if the Guild has been inactive, on the contrary the guild has been moving forward gaining ground every day. We just finished ART BLAST 2008 where the guild had a booth teaching kid how to sculpt with everyday household items (we had them sculpt with aluminum foil), over 300 kids signed into the guild booth today and we used up 1500 feet of aluminum foil and had adults pick up over a hundred ’06 and ’07 show catalogs (free advertising for the guild sculptors in those catalogs). Kids came from all over the state and some as far away as Fort Worth Texas. I have posted some photos on the guild web site, the link to the photos can be found on the home page.
I must say that I am a little disappointed at our guild members’ participation in this event. Email was sent out about the event, it was posted on the guild web site, I talked to some members on the phone and even spoke to others in person. We had asked for volunteers to help staff the booth and work with the kids helping to fulfill part of our mission of educating kids and the public about sculpting and the Arkansas Sculptors Guild. We had also asked that members each create a small sculpture from aluminum foil for the kids to look at but received none. The booth was manned by Bre, Brett and I along with one adult volunteer and 4 teenage volunteers who helped sign the kinds in and pass out foil. While the event was only 4 hours long it was a maddening rush for the three of us to get to all the kids, encouraging them as they endeavored to create a sculpture while at the same time explaining as much as we could about sculpture over all. TEN members working the booth would still have been taxing.
The web site is getting a tremendous amount of hits each month, however very, (and I mean very,) few of them are from our members checking the site to see what is new and just what might be coming up. I know the economy has everyone scrambling and that all have multiple things going on, but if you wish to be taken seriously as professional sculptors and bring recognition to our mission statement, then everyone must challenge themselves to put a little more into making our mission a reality.
We are preparing for Gallery Walk in Hot Springs, the date is December 5th, we will be Featuring ARSG Members work in our Light and Time Design downtown studio located at the ART CHURCH! If you like to show 1 or 2 small sculpture please RSVP me no later than 9 am Monday 1st, by email so I will know who is participating and how many sculptures we can handle, the press release will be going to the paper Tuesday Morning, each member will be responsible for getting their work to me no later than Thursday December 4, by 12: noon so that we will have time to set it up before Gallery Walk. I will email full details to those who RSVP their intent to participate. We are also trying to book a month long show for our members in May at the ART CHURCH‘S Main Gallery. We are putting plans together for a February weekend show in Morrilton, AR in conjunction with the Arts Council of Conway County.

You will be receiving more mails in the next day or two concerning guild related events.

Please contact me if you have questions on any of the upcoming events.

Sincerely,

David Harris
President ARSG
